30th Anniversary Celebration Choir Tour
April 6-12, 2011
In April 2011, The Silver Serenaders of Texas
celebrated its 30th Anniversary at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, as it did on its 20th and 10th anniversaries.
Leaving Cedar Hill early on April 6 by bus, the choir reached Amarillo, TX that night in time to perform at the beautifully ornate First Baptist Church (pictured at left).
Our next overnight stop was at the prestigious Broadmoor Hotel and Resort in Colorado Springs, CO. The Broadmoor was our base of operations for five days. We held all our meetings there and were able to have many sightseeing excursions from there. Seven Falls, Pikes Peak, and the Garden of the Gods were among the many exciting places we visited.
Early Sunday morning, we were privileged to sing at the Air Force Academy Protestant Worship Service. Appreciate the magnificence of this chapel in the slide show to follow.
After church, we were treated to a 'scrumptious' brunch at the Falcon Club on campus.
On the way back to the hotel, a tour guide boarded our bus and took us through the scenic Garden of the Gods. A sample of the wonders of this place, framed by the snow-capped Pikes Peak in the background, is shown in the photo on the right.
This kind of scene no doubt helped to inspire Katherine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful" while she was on Pikes Peak.
On the last day of our journey back to Texas, we had a special treat to visit the CROSS OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST MINISTRIES park near Groom in the Texas Panhandle.
In addition to the 19-story tall main cross (shown at left), all the Stations of the Cross are represented in near life-sized sculptures. This stop was the crowning finish to a wonderful tour.
Several mornings we had worship and devotional services which provided inspiration for choir members and their guests. Dr. Shane Kinnison was our principle speaker in the mornings, and Dr. Rosemary Rumbley entertained us at one luncheon. In addition, several Silver Serenaders shared their testimonies in word and song.
Thus the Silver Serenaders were able to fulfill one of the goals for our 30th year of ministry to honor our founders Jim and Betty Palmer by returning to the magnificent Broadmoor for the third decade in a row. We are already thinking about returning to Colorado Springs for our 40th year celebration (or maybe the 35th!).
